Battle of the Books is an annual trivia event hosted by Oakville Public Library that promotes teamwork and a love of reading amongst Oakville elementary school-aged kids. Each year, participating schools select a team of students who work together to read as many books as possible from our author list in preparation for the big event. At the round robin battle, teams are asked alternating questions based on books from our author list.


Teams:

  • Each team is made up of six players and can have up to three substitutes, to a maximum of nine players
  • Lower grade players can substitute for higher grade positions; however, higher grades cannot substitute for lower grade positions
  • Junior level teams have up to three students from Grades 3, 4 and 5
  • Senior level teams have up to three students from Grades 6, 7 and 8
  • Teams may substitute up to three players at the halfway point

Each team will be asked 8 questions per battle from the following categories:

  • Canadian
  • Award Winners
  • Classics (Senior only)
  • Picture Books (Junior only)
  • New Titles (within two years)
  • Popular Fiction
  • Character
  • Folk/Fairytales (Junior only)
  • Myths/Legends (Senior only)
  • Genre


The Battle

  • Each team has 30 seconds to respond with the correct author and/or title
  • The team being questioned earns five points for correctly naming the title, character or series and three points for naming the correct author
  • An author’s surname will be accepted, and in the case of two or more authors, only one surname is required. Titles must be exact
  • If the team cannot answer the question, the opposing team has the chance to answer immediately to gain bonus points, with two points given for title/character name and one point for the author
  • The two teams with the highest cumulative score from both the junior and senior levels go on to play in the Grand Battle
  • The winning junior and senior teams from the Grand Battle will represent Oakville at the Halton regional battle in May

Points:

  • The team being questioned earns five points for the title/character/series and three points for the author
  • Author surname is sufficient, and in the case of joint authorship, only one surname is required
  • Titles must be exact. The adjudicator's decision will be final in the case of any questionable team answers.
  • If the team cannot answer the question, the opposing team has the chance to answer immediately, with two points given for title/character name and one point for the author.

The Winners:

  • The top four teams with the highest cumulative score from both the junior and senior levels go on to play in the Grand Battle.
  • The Grand Battle is held in the evening. The winning teams from the Grand Battle (one junior, one senior) will go on to represent Oakville at the Regional Battle in May, which is held during the school day in one of the four public libraries in Halton
  • Please note the change in location this year. All Junior and Senior Round Robins will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre located at 2302 Bridge Road.
