Write2Xpress Winners

Winners of the Write2Xpress Competition for which Friends provided funds to organize and pay guest writer and judges, were announced at an awards night at Iroquois Ridge Secondary School on Monday, December 7th. The students were all to write a story using the following photograph as a prompt.

Grade 7/8

1st place: Jane Jacobs for “Finding Rose”

2nd place: Samuel P. Doyle for “The Curious Incident of the Man in the Batman Suit”

3rd place: Lauryn Farrell for “Down”

Grade 9/10

1st place: Kati Tomkins for “Iron and Tears”

2nd place: Holly Koponen for “The Darkness Beyond the Doorway”

3rd place: Katrina Blandfor “Labyrinth”

Grade 11/12

1st place: Tommy Nicholls for “The Bottom Rung”

2nd place: Lauren P. MacLellan for “Concrete Elephants”

3rd place: James Applewhaite for “What is the Blood Content of My Liquor?”

Judges for the event were: Jodi Sanderson, writer, editor, former councilor, and Sheridan College teacher, Oakville Beaver managing editor Rod Jerred, and Pick of the Crop, children’s book store, owner Lynne Scott. The fifth year of the event drew more than 60 entries and the judges all indicated that they were impressed with the creativity of the submissions.write2express2009
